History of the Paraiba Tourmaline
The stone was discovered in the 1980s by Heitor Dimas Barbosa, a very motivated gem miner that knew that something special was hidden in the hills of the Brazilian state of Paraiba. The stone is categorized under the Tourmaline's family, which dates back to at least the 3rd Century B.C. The different stones under the Tourmaline family vary in their presence. The Paraiba specifically is recognized for its unmatched beauty, and is idolized as a very prestigious gemstone.
We Owe it all to Copper
Most tourmalines owe their coloring to iron, manganese, chrome and vanadium. However, the Paraiba Tourmaline properties consist mostly of copper, unlike any other tourmaline. The copper in high concentrations is the reason for the distinct array of fascinating hues of blue, turquoise and green. Another component of the Paraiba tourmaline is manganese, which consist of violet and red hues. However, when utilizing the burning affect these colors are eliminated from the stone leaving just the distinct blue hues from the copper to make up the Paraiba Tourmaline.
