How to Use the 4 C’s of Diamonds to Pick the Perfect One for Your Engagement Ring
August 1st, 2019
One of the most important and exciting days for a woman is the day the love of her life asks her to spend all eternity with her, as it will be a day she will remember forever. If you want to make sure the moment is perfect (and she says yes), it helps to make sure that her engagement ring is everything she’s ever wanted. Not sure where to start? The 4 C’s of diamonds is your guide to picking the ring of her dreams.
The 4 C’s for Finding the Perfect Diamond
Color
The first thing you want to look for when purchasing your engagement ring is the color. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades diamond color on a scale of D to Z. At the top of the scale are diamonds graded D, E and F (colorless), followed by G, H, I and J (near colorless range), and finally K to Z (faint to light yellow color). Diamonds with as little color as possible are valued the most and subsequently more expensive; diamonds that are saturated with color (also called ’fancy? diamonds) are graded on another scale.
While almost all diamonds have a little bit of color to them, you will not see too many stones with a noticeable tint in most jewelry stores.
Cut
The next thing you want to look for when considering the 4 C’s of diamonds is the cut, which refers to the way a diamond is cut to maximize its sparkle and brilliance.
Contrary to what many people think, the cut of a diamond is different from its shape. Superior diamond cuts reflect most of the light that enters them, while diamonds with poor cuts experience ’light leakage? and look dull and lifeless to the eye.
Clarity
A diamond’s clarity, or the absence of internal inclusions and external blemishes, is the next deciding factor when purchasing your ring. These inclusions and blemishes are natural and are the result of a diamond being exposed to tremendous heat and pressure deep in the earth while it is forming.
Clarity is based on a scale of 6 categories, which are Flawless (FL), Internally Flawless (IF), Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2) Inclusions, Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2), Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2), and Included (I1, I2, and I3).
Choosing a diamond without any visible imperfections will be important, as some diamond shapes show inclusions and blemishes more easily than others.
Carat Weight
The final ’C? in the 4 C’s of diamonds is the carat weight; in other words, the weight of the diamond. In metric terms, a carat is defined as 200 milligrams that is subdivided into 100 ’points? for the most precise measurements to the hundredth decimal place.
It should come as no surprise that the heavier the diamond the bigger increase in price, but the other factors of a diamond will also help determine the final cost.
